From 1 to 7
‘Erika from 1 to 7, could you tell me how happy you are right now?’ he asked. ‘Why 7, Why not 10?’ I giggled. ‘Well, because for me, 7 is all I could ask for’. This is an anonymous portrait of a person living illegally in the UK. After escaping from his homeland, where he felt he was under constant surveillance, he came to a land of possibilities but ended up facing fear, rejection and isolation. It is a collaboration in which I collected my subject’s personal drawings and tried to visualise his inner thoughts and feelings, as well as the wider issues concerned with living under these circumstances.
